Description

Posting Duration This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time. COVID-19 Vaccination Mandate Sandia demonstrates its commitment to public safety in the national interest by requiring that all new hires be fully vaccinated or have an approved medical or religious accommodation before commencing employment. The requirement also applies to those who are telecommuting and working virtually. Any concerns about the ability to meet this requirement should be directed to HR Solutions at (505) 284-4700. What Your Job Will Be Like We are seeking a materials scientist, metallurgist or mechanical engineer (job title: R&D S&E, Materials Science) to perform advanced research in deformation and fracture of structural materials - particularly metals - in gaseous hydrogen environments. Research is performed at multiple length scales in teams with a diverse set of backgrounds that include daily interactions with mechanical metallurgists, microscopists, surface scientists and computational scientists. On any given day, you may be called on to: * Develop and sustain an experimental research portfolio * Work with staff in a multidisciplinary setting (including computational mechanics), to address fundamental scientific questions related to hydrogen-materials interactions and apply new understanding to advance materials knowledge relevant to Sandia's energy and national security missions. * Develop scientific questions and to acquire both internal and external research funding to collaborate in the outstanding Hydrogen Effects on Materials Laboratory (HEML) at Sandia.
Our research activities have high-visibility both nationally and internationally, and successful candidates therefore must have strong presentation and writing skills. Qualifications We Require * PhD in materials science, metallurgical or mechanical engineering, or other relevant field * Experience with fracture mechanics and fatigue testing methodologies and analysis * A record of first-author or co-authored scientific publications * Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q security clearance Qualifications We Desire * Documented experience with microstructural characterization of structural metals using conventional and advanced microscopy and microanalysis techniques * Strong understanding of physical and mechanical metallurgy and knowledge of thermomechanical processing of steels and aluminum alloys * Familiarity with the effects of hydrogen on the behavior of structural materials: ferritic and austenitic steels, aluminum alloys, and nickel-based alloys * Experience with advanced characterization techniques to evaluate residual stress, microstructure, deformation and fracture * Inclusive research approach - ability to work with and leverage expertise in a diverse group of scientists and engineers * Good written and verbal communication skills through presentations at scientific conferences and journal publications About Our Team The Hydrogen and Materials Science Department provides expertise to both Sandia and the Nation to advance the infrastructure necessary to promote the use of hydrogen and its isotopes in areas relevant to Sandia's energy and nuclear deterrence missions. Staff conduct research that spans fundamental science to engineered materials in nationally recognized experimental facilities for hydrogen science. Focus areas include: fundamental understanding of material structure and behavior with respect to compatibility and aging in gaseous environments, analysis of hydrogen's long-term impact on structural materials, inform hydrogen safety codes and standards, gas behavior for risk analysis, development of solar thermochemical technology for hydrogen production, and solid-state and liquid storage for light duty vehicles and stationary applications. This expertise is applied to hydrogen end-use (e.g. air, marine, rail) application feasibility and performance assessments with industry partners. More information on the Sandia Hydrogen program website.
