As a Product Designer in the IT UX team, you will be a vital link between colleagues, customers, and partners, and you will have the opportunity to shape how VMware – and the world -- meets the challenges of today and beyond. Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing? The primary objective of this position is to design, lead, and drive inclusive, human-centered design solutions across our internal colleague- and business-facing IT applications. Our design team supports back-end business and product applications, colleague experiences, and integrates a complex ecosystem to improve the ease, clarity, and speed of our business. Within the first three months- Get to know about VMware Design processes, tools, and colleagues by attending internal trainings, reading technical material, and having conversations with key stakeholders. Begin understanding the core personas, workflows, and applications of the product segment(s) you will be supporting. Meet with your colleagues in the design and cross-functional teams to develop relationships with them, understand project scopes, and proactively establish trust and rapport that will help drive design initiatives in the future. Focus on small wins that will help establish a good rapport with your peers. Within the first six months- Following a user-centered design process, deliver designs for impactful initiatives focusing on end-to-end workflows and conducting thorough research to gain confidence in your design decisions. Collaborate and engage with other designers, strategists, architects, researchers as needed. Develop a cadence for connecting with the cross-functional team and partners in your domain. Demonstrate careful listening to stakeholder feedback while still maintaining ownership and autonomy over the design decisions. Resolve conflicts and make timely decisions by being thoughtful and informed at the same time. Agree to disagree and commit. Deal with different personality types with empathy and choose battles where our customers will have the maximum positive impact. Work with engineering to ensure design specifications were followed in the implementation and resolve any fit and finish issues. Beyond six months- Support colleague product designers, design strategists, architects, managers, and cross-functional stakeholders to identify long-term strategic design initiatives that are visionary in nature. Bring visionary ideas to life by documenting end-to-end workflows, rapid prototyping and validate with users as needed. Iterate on the designs as needed and work with PMs to influence the product roadmap. Set a direction for the design team by identifying smaller initiatives that connect with the vision. Responsibilities Employ user-centered design processes and methods to drive improvements to the user experience of VMware internal, business-critical applications for both OCTO and CDTO. Collaborate with stakeholders, product management, governance, and engineering teams to identify product goals and vision. Partner with user experience researchers to talk directly with customers to understand the user needs, goals and motivations. Independently conduct user and/or competitive research as needed. Work to fulfill a design strategy that supports customer needs and business goals. Provide detailed end-to-end workflows and user flows illustrating the solution. Champion accessible design, and contribute to improving organizational understandings of and commitments to delivering inclusive solutions that conform to WCAG and internal design requirements. Closely collaborate with a geographically spread design team to co-design while ensuring consistency within and across the ecosystems. Advocate for user’s needs throughout the development lifecycle in an agile/iterative environment to ensure problem-solution fit. Verify and improve on designs through reviews, validations and formal usability testing with end users. Review UI implementation and engage with engineering to address fit and finish issues. Become a subject matter expert with the ability to understand the latest architecture, technology, solution, market trends, as well as competitive offerings related to VMware cloud. What is the structure and culture of the team like? You will be joining the VMware IT User Experience team in the Office of Digital Transformation. The team is managed by Kristina Ross, a veteran with 25+ years of experience in the design field, with deep background in application UX design, research, and management. The team is geographically dispersed, with a portion of the team distributed across the US, Bangalore, India, and Sofia, Bulgaria. The team culture is based on building trust, is highly collaborative and focused on establishing relationships within design and cross-functional teams.
