Under the direction of the Site Administrator or Director-Special Education, assist a certificated teacher in reinforcing instruction to individuals or small groups of students with special needs assigned to a Resource Specialist Program (RSP), Special Day Class (SDC) or general education classroom environment; assist in the preparation of instructional materials and implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs); assist in the presentation and preparation of learning materials, lesson plans and instructional exercises; perform routine clerical and supportive tasks for instructional personnel.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Tutor and lead individuals or small groups of students with special needs; reinforce instruction in a variety of academic subjects as directed by the teacher; monitor and oversee student drills, practices and assignments in various subjects; assist students in completing classroom
assignments, homework and projects.
Assist a teacher with the implementation of Individualized Education Plans (IEP); assist assigned students in reaching IEP academic, emotional, social, physical and behavioral goals; adapt and adjust curriculum to accommodate individual student learning needs as directed by the teacher.
Perform a variety of clerical duties and supportive tasks in support of classroom activities such as preparing, copying and filing instructional materials.
Assist students with performing and developing academic, social, behavioral skills; assist in shaping students behavior through positive reinforcement, redirection and other strategies; support student self-care and toileting routines as needed.
Assure student understanding of classroom rules and procedures; assist students by answering questions, providing proper examples, emotional support, friendly attitude and general guidance.
Observe, guide and support student behavior in the classroom according to approved
procedures; monitor and interact with students during outdoor, field trips, and other recreational activities as directed; accompany and assist students to in mainstream classes; report progress regarding student performance and behavior; escort students to and from designated school locations.
Set up work areas, supplies and equipment in the classroom for student use; administer various tests or assessments as directed by teacher; correct daily assignments.
Assist students in the operation of a variety of instructional technology as required; set up computers for assigned students.
Operate a variety of classroom and office equipment including audiovisual equipment, a computer and assigned software.
Assure the health and safety of students by following established District policies practices and procedures; maintain classroom learning environment in a safe, orderly and clean manner.
Communicate and collaborate with teachers, case managers, support staff, personnel and others to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns regarding student behavior and
progress; contact parents/guardians to schedule IEPs and other meetings.
Maintain confidentiality of student information; prepare files, logs and documentation as required.
Attend meetings and in-services as assigned.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and two years experience working with children in an educational or organized learning environment. College coursework in psychology, special education, child growth and development may be substituted for experience.
Requirements specified under Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Special qualifications supported by Title I funds include:
o Completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher education or, o Obtained an associates or higher degree (college level) or,
o Met a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate, through a formal State or local academic assessment, knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing and mathematics.
Licenses and other Requirements
Some incumbents in this classification may be required to speak, read and write in English and Spanish.
Valid First Aid certification (preferred).
