Visual Designer

We are currently seeking an experienced Visual Designer for the UX Research team for a 12 month contractual opportunity with our client in Mountain View, CA. In this role, you will be responsible for conducting product audits, identifying patterns, and creating flexible, enterprise-focused components that can be used by all. The mixed-method role will focus on leading user research (usability studies and surveys).

The responsibilities will include:

  • Conduct independent research on user, designer, and developer; run studies, analysis, and reporting to improve the usability and utility as a portal for a design system used by designers and developers across the world.
  • Apply qualitative and quantitative skills to define success metrics that are meaningful to users and product success. Identify qualitative and quantitative markers of user experience.
  • Evaluate design concepts via in-lab user testing, remote moderated user testing), lightweight field studies (e.g., interview-based) at conferences or companies of users, surveys, and interviews to collect user feedback.
  • Collaborate with designers, engineering, and product managers to define design goals and success metrics.
  • Strike a balance between validity & reliability of the findings and agility of the execution in order to provide well-grounded, timely recommendations.
  • Understand and incorporate complex technical and business requirements into research.
  • Work with designers, product managers, engineers and research managers to prioritize research opportunities in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment.
  • Evangelize research findings to diverse audiences through written reports and oral presentations.
  • Collaborate with other researchers to a research program that validates design guidelines by generalizing across multiple studies, planned collaboratively.
  • Interpret research results for the team, socialize the findings, and guide the responses to research insights in order to drive measurable improvements to the product.
  • Learn about prior work on design systems and how they’re adopted by designers and developers.

Required Skills:

  • Minimum qualifications BA/BSc in Computer Science with a focus on Human Computer Interaction and/or Design/ OR MS degree in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Information Science, Experimental Psychology, or a related field.
  • Must have 3+ years of work experience integrating user research into product design and design practices.
  • Prior experience analyzing and distilling insights from both quantitative and qualitative data sources.
  • Experience conducting moderated user testing, in-lab user testing, surveys, semi-structured interviews, contextual field visits or ethnography.
  • Strong understanding of strengths and shortcomings of different research methods.
  • Excellent working knowledge of qualitative and experimental research methods and of qualitative and quantitative analysis methods.
  • Excellent leadership, communication and teamwork skills.
  • Experience collaborating with designers, product managers and engineers
  • Excellent skills translating research results into actionable design recommendations and communicating these to colleagues in other job functions.
  • A deep desire to apply design toward expanding what's possible and improving the world.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience conducting semi-structured interviews, contextual field visits or ethnography, in-lab user testing, moderated user testing, surveys.
  • Prior experience analyzing and distilling insights from both quantitative and qualitative data sources.
  • Excellent skills translating research results into actionable design recommendations and communicating these to colleagues in other job functions.
  • Solid understanding of the strengths and shortcomings of different research methods, and deep knowledge of the types of problems to apply the research methods to.
  • Experience working with teams to determine appropriate metrics to measure.
  • Proven fluency in a wide array of mixed-methods research methodologies (both qual and quant) plus solid experimental design skills.
  • Ability to explain metrics analyses and analytical decisions clearly and persuasively to a variety of audiences.
  • Prior experience with technologies and resources for designers and UI developers: e.g., design systems, designer tools and workflows.
