Position Summary: 
The Background Clearance Specialist serves students in teacher preparation programs by providing information and customer service by phone and in writing, and by receiving and entering student background check information into WGU databases.  
 
The Background Clearance Specialist serves students in teacher preparation programs by providing information and customer service by phone and in writing, and by receiving and entering student background check information into WGU databases.  

Essential Functions and Responsibilities: 
•    Requests and records background checks on current students prior to their field experiences;
•    Explains requirements and processes to students in writing (email) and by telephone;
•    Maintains electronic documents, files, and records containing confidential student information;
•    Conducts research to verify information and come up with new processes as needed;
•    Responds in a timely fashion to changing requirements, priorities, and short deadlines.

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:
•    Technological competence with data entry, Outlook email and calendar, MS Office (Word and Excel), Adobe, Salesforce SRM, and other databases;
•    Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present information clearly and accurately;
•    Strong ability to categorize and classify information;
•    Able to work well within a team, but also be independent enough to work well alone;
•    Ability to independently research and summarize findings;
•    Strong organizational and planning skills;
•    Sensitivity to and the ability to maintain confidentiality;
•    Ability to exercise good judgment and effectively organize, prioritize, and perform multiple job functions and conflicting priorities.
 
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
•    Understand the background check requirements for 56 states and U.S. territories, and be able to explain these to others as needed;
•    Establish effective working relationships with students, fellow employees, and external agencies;
•    Manage multiple, competing projects and deadlines; and 
•    Be acutely attentive to details. 
•    Enjoy administrative work that requires precision.

Preferred Qualifications:
•    An earned baccalaureate degree in a writing-intensive and/or business related field (e.g., Humanities, English, History, Anthropology, Art History, Communications, Economics) from an accredited college or university, and
•    Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
•    Timely and accurate handling of student correspondence;
•    Timely and accurate processing of background checks; 
•    Maintenance of the Student Handbook articles containing background check instructions, and
•    Completion of personal and professional goals as established annually.
