Job Type

Varian Proton Therapy (VPT) is a division of Varian Medical Systems that produces small volume, building size medical devices to deliver world class cancer treatments.  These devices are state of the art and involve highly complex systems of moving parts that are very large in scale while still having high precision requirements. The problems that need to be solved range from how to position something at micron levels of accuracy to how do we keep the large system light and small enough to be able to be moved by a specialized truck.

Technologies include large steel fabrication, high precision servo systems, vacuum, complex moving parts of all sizes, plastics, robotics and super conductors.
Mechanical Engineers can expect to be given a portion of a problem or design to implement.  Working with other engineers the Mechanical Engineer will then be expected to be involved in examining the problem, deciding how to solve the problem, take part in the design work necessary, document the design, prototype, testing and the push of the solution out to production.  This may include engaging outside vendors, working with sub-suppliers, and the creation of requirements.  The Mechanical Engineer will also be expected to be learning new technologies and keeping up to date on engineering methods.
Day to day activities will vary based on the project and phase of the project.  The Mechanical Engineer can be expected to interface with a variety of external suppliers, internal departments, other engineers and support staff.  Due to the size and complexity of the product, project durations can be either be short or long and multiple projects may need to be run simultaneously.  As a medical device company, continuous training and detailed documentation will be part of the normal process.  Mechanical engineers will be expected to be involved in the sourcing, hands on installation and testing of their designs.
The Varian Proton Therapy division is very international with major branches located in Troisdorf, Germany and Milpitas, California.   Equipment is built, tested, and installed all over the world.  The Mechanical Engineer can thus be expected to need to communicate with, solve problems at, or travel to any of these locations as needed.
