UnitedHealth Care Research and Analytics is currently seeking a Data Scientist to join our dynamic team. In this role you will help reach our goals of seamless proactive complex member service and healthcare using analytics and machine learning. You should be an exceptional disciplined and self-motivated Data Scientist with Machine Learning and Predictive Modeling experience and a passion for working with healthcare data, hands-on skills using various big-data and ML platform tools, and proven experience delivering business impact on a portfolio of projects. This role will also require experience with business intelligence and visualization, analytics business development, formal requirements gathering, and delivery of analytic solutions to business leaders.

You will be working with data scientists, data engineers, and business analysts, and business insights experts detect vulnerable patients and provide first-in-class healthcare solutions. You will also design robust program evaluation approaches and measure the impact of healthcare programs and services. Will be expected to work with other team members as a collaborative unit to solve big business problems. Additionally, innovation is a key to our business and solving these problems. Primary Responsibilities:
  • Work alongside other data scientists, engineers, and project managers to design and implement, improve, and extend analytics methods in our solutions end-to-end, including data ingestion and preparation, feature engineering, analysis and modeling, model deployment, performance tracking and documentation
  • Conduct hands-on data analysis and predictive analytics on large datasets and effectively communicate those complex technical results to business partners
  • Work with a great deal of autonomy to support and drive analytic efforts around machine learning and innovation aimed at finding solutions to complex health problems, member experience improvement possibilities, and healthcare affordability plays
  • Work with our business intelligence and healthcare economics partners to fairly evaluate program progress, success and opportunities for improvement using pragmatic controlled trials and other standard experimental program evaluation methods to measure business progress
  • Independently curate data needed for analyses through disparate data sources in a big data environment (BDPaaS on Hadoop) and enterprise data sources

Required Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree in applicable area of expertise or 5+ years of hands-on experience in data analysis and predictive analytics with machine learning/statistical modeling techniques
  • 2+ years of experience with data science languages such as Python, R, AI and SQL
  • Experience applying computational algorithms and statistical methods to structured and unstructured data and measuring solution performance (e.g., F1, AUC, sensitivity, specificity) in an iterative development process
  • Experience combining analytic methods with advanced data visualizations using, for example, Tableau, PowerBI, Shiny, or D3
  • Experience communicating highly technical results to a diverse audience of stakeholder from laymen to C-level executives
  • Experience in program evaluation and common scientific methods to ascertain impact of solutions
  • Experience with the product development and lifecycle, preferably in a technical domains (software, hardware, analytics)
  • 1+ years of experience delivering and translating business needs into data science requirements/work, explaining data science concepts and results to colleagues and leaders
  • 1+ years of experience with the landscape of data science methods, including data collection, data cleaning & validation, data storage & security, data processing, communication, and iteration
  • 1+ years of experience independently building event-based data systems and wrangling large and custom datasets with big data tools such as Hadoop, Hive, and Spark
  • Superior critical thinking skills and a desire to address difficult and complex problems using data
  • Polished professional verbal and written communication skills adaptable to a wide variety of audiences (laymen to C-level executives) through a variety of formats (readouts, conferences, lectures, informal discussions, formal presentation, whitepapers, peer-reviewed manuscripts)

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in relevant technical discipline such as Computer Science, Psychology, Computer/Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or related field
  • Project Management Certification (e.g, PMP, Six Sigma)
  • Agile Certification (OSAM or Others)
  • History of mentoring data scientists and working in a cross-functional matrix environment
  • Demonstrated experience of creating assessment tools
  • Application development skills (UI, .net, etc)
  • Basic knowledge of machine learning and data processing services from cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure
  • Experience conducting experiments (primary research, A/B testing, design of experiments, etc) including preparing necessary regulatory documents (Institutional review board, patent application, legal disclosure, etc)
